A young Scandinavian man would indicate his intentions by presenting a “hovedvandsaeg” to his lady of choice. It is also called a “vinaigrette” since it was used not only for spices but also smelling salts. This one is heart shaped with a crown on top and a weighted base. It is beautifully engraved with a leaf motif. The marriage box has been personalized with pin pricked initials, “K.Y.O.”. It is clearly marked on the bottom with “88”, “STR”, “GR” and the place mark. It dates circa 1780 and has only two minor dents. It measures approximately three inches tall and weighs .71 troy ounces. A rare offering by Chancery Lane Antiques, Inc.
