Matthew Boulton was a prominent citizen and business man in Birmingham England during the 18thC and early 19thC. HIs many accomplishments include his success with James Watt in refining the new steam engine, his invention of the modern coinage as well as factory systems, the establishment of the Birmingham and Sheffield assay offices and the design and production of very fine Georgian silver both sterling and plated silver known as Old Sheffield Plate. In recognition of his achievements, the international society, the Lunar Society, honored him with membership. Benjamin Franklin also was among the members of this group. Some refer to Matthew Boulton as the Benjamin Franklin of England.
